Parking has become a major problem in Strathfield area but it cannot be looked in isolation. I’ve always maintained that Strathfield Train Station is the most important part of Strathfield area. It is the real reason why house prices and rents are so high here. But this station is used by everyone. The fact that the station itself is situated on the boarder of Strathfield and Burwood Council means that people from both councils and surrounding areas will be using it. Now, the problem is tat all these people have to reach the situation from their houses and need somewhere to park. Successive state, federal and council representatives have failed to plan for this rise in traffic.
Putting more metered car parks and rangers is not the solution to this problem. In fact that will only make the situation worse. It will mean more people will end up breaking the law by parking illegally and businesses will suffer as less and less people would visit shops in the Strathfield area. Just look at Lyons Street in Strathfield which comes under Burwood Council. They are using metered parking there and nobody is using that space.
That is a bad decision by Buwood Council because 1. We are wasting precious space and 2. It is putting more pressure on surrounding roads.
The solution to all these problems is a new multilevel car park at the Strathfield Station. There is a tiny car park opposite Strathfield Station at the moment. This should be extended taking in the parts of Strathfield Square. Obviously, it would lead to temporary disruptions until the car park is fully built but it is still better than the current situation.
Earlier in the year, I was approached by Strathfield Council to state my position as a candidate in the state election on the issue of a commuter car park and I had replied back to the council that I fully supported the creation of a new computer car park in the vicinity of the Strathfield train station.

Totally agree with Mark here. Even if you want to meter the parking (to over the cost of construction and maintenance), make it free for after hours and weekends. This will also increase the number of people who would visit Strathfield Shopping streets around the station.
Out of curiosity, would anyone pay for parking? Like 2.50 an hour for undercover parking?
Most of the problems I see in this is that everybody wants the service but no-one wants to pay for it.
