Strathfield Council are kicking into clean-up gear for Clean-Up Australia Day

 

Clean Up Australia Day’s been around for 21 years, and some have questioned its relevance. But if anyone needs proof that Clean Up Australia Day is still important in 2011, they only have to go on patrol with Strathfield Council’s rangers.

Old mattresses, abandoned cars, rotting garbage and discarded fridges and cookers are just some of the items regularly being dumped on the streets of Greenacre and Belfield.

Asbestos, now regarded as a major danger, 
is another regular – and disturbing – find.

More than forty people from nine countries will become Australian citizens in a special ceremony at Strathfield Park next week as part of  Strathfield Council’s Australia Day celebrations.

“Citizenship is a wonderful thing to celebrate on Australia Day, whether we are Australian by birth or by choice,” Mayor of Strathfield, Cr Tony Maroun said.

More than forty people from nine countries will become Australian citizens in a special ceremony at Strathfield Park next week as part of  Strathfield Council’s Australia Day celebrations.

Sudave Singh, now a statistician with the United Nations, reminices about his youth in Strathfield.

Sudave Singh is a Strathfield boy made good. The Trinity Grammar School graduate grew up on High Street and once launched a campaign to save Edwards Park from property development. His passion for civic activism led to his current role as a statistician for the United Nations.

What are your fondest memories of Strathfield?

I loved going to this little corner store up near South Strathfield Public School to buy ice-cream with my mum after school.
