Two senior councillors squared up in the council chamber as tempers rose over the appointment of a new deputy mayor.

It was supposed to be a simple job swap when councillor Bill Carney decided to relinquish the position of deputy mayor in favour of fellow Liberal colleague Helen McLucas.

Instead, it led to a dramatic confrontation between two of Strathfield’s most senior members, who squared up to each other in the Council Chamber.

Councillors had already accepted the sole nomination of Cr McLucas when Cr Keith Kwon rose to his feet, suggesting the change was “a kind of musical chairs.”

Strathfield’s new mayor, Paul Barron, answers the 10 most pressing questions as he embarks on a crucial 12 months for the municipality.

What do you see as the main challenges for the year ahead?

There are three major items in the coming 12 months that are of great importance to our area: the Strathfield Town Centre Project, release of the Local Environment Plan (LEP) and getting Strathfield a fully functioning police station.

I’m also passionate about cycling, and plan to raise the idea of introducing bike lanes. I’m not proposing to close roads but for there to be markings to indicate possible bike routes in the area.

The council is braced for a big response to its forthcoming parking forum – many Strathfield motorists are very angry about the chronic lack of on-street parking in the area.
