Cutting down traffic and health behind move to pedal power

Local bicycle clubs and bike shops have welcomed moves to encourage more people to take up cycling in the municipality.

Strathfield Mayor Cr Paul Barron has already made cycling a platform of his term, asking council staff to prepare pro-cycling strategies.

Among the proposals being considered are the installation of bicycle lockers at Strathfield station and the creation of designated laneways to separate cyclists from cars, buses and trucks.

Strathfield's proposed ban on smoking

SMOKERS and business owners are deeply divided over a proposal to ban smoking from all outdoor dining areas currently being considered by Strathfield Council.

If adopted the new policy, outlined at a council meeting earlier this week, would outlaw smoking from all alfresco dining areas on council land. Such a ban would affect a number of  popular local cafes, such as  Rainbow Cakes, Gloria Jeans, Maldini’s and CC’s Char Grill.
