Strathfield's  Carols by Candlelight attracted a big crowd, with families settling in for three hours of entertainment and a fabulous fireworks display at the park.

The Mayor, Cr Paul Barron, launched the festivities at the Chalmers Road field under clear skies and from a special decorated mobile stage, complete with Christmas tree and lights.

Dancers, singers and carollers followed before a 15 minute firework display towards 9pm produced a fitting end to a grand night of free festivities -  an official start to the big holiday break.

Kats-Chernin donated scores and Gartner turned auctioneer to coax a large crowd into bidding for the charity sale.

Kats-Chernin, one of Australia's best known composers, played her own works while Gartner conducted Dvorak in a melodious night of music at Strathfield's town hall.

Foxes rampage through Strathfield

Early morning golfers are being told to watch out for vicious foxes roaming across the pristine fairways at the Strathfield Golf Club.

Groundsmen at the club say that the feral foxes, now in plague numbers across the inner-west, are becoming increasingly brazen – in one incident, a fox chased and terrorised a female golfer.
