Labor leader Robertson says he intervened because she is the best candidate

Former minister and Newcastle MP Jodi Mckay  is expected to be chosen to stand for the state seat of Strathfield today, after Labor's executive called off a public pre-selection and Burwood mayor John Faker and former Strathfield Mayor Daniel Bott dropped out.

Labor leader John Robertson asked Ms McKay to take on the seat, and is strongly backing her as candidate.

Mr Robertson wrote to the National Secretary of the ALP saying:  “Recent ICAC hearings have proved Jodi to be a person of the highest integrity and the strongest character.”

Labor mayor comes out fighting in battle for Strathfield state seat. 

Burwood mayor John Faker told Labor Party officials he wants to stand for pre-selection for the state seat of Strathfield, maintaining he should not be made to stand aside for former minister and Newcastle MP Jodi McKay.

“It’s going to be a dirty campaign,” he told the Scene.  “They are going to try to throw everything at me.”

But former Newcastle MP and minister says she still hasn't made up her mind

Former Newcastle MP Jodi McKay, who revealed to the Scene she has held talks with Labor Party officials about running in the State seat of Strathfield, is refusing to be "parachuted in" to the constutuency by Labor Party head office.

Ms McKay told the Scene today has made it clear she will contest a community selection process. " I won't be parachuted in - it has to be by a process that is acceptable to the community and to the party."

There are Australian towns that are built on gold rushes, others on oil or coal. But Strathfield originally thrived because of biscuits.

Not any old biscuits, mind. It’s in Strathfield that Arnott’s, the biscuit brand that’s Australian as kangaroos became the national force it is today. And it’s Arnott’s that helped make Strathfield the great town it is today.
