New group goes for Strathfield residents

August 14 - Strathfield's council elections are heating up with the formation of a new political group, bringing the total number of parties or independent bodies contesting the seven seats to five.

United Strathfield joins Strathfield First in the battle to win the hearts and minds of residents with a strong local appeal on issues.

Also in the line up for seats are the Liberals, Labor and the Unity Party.

What do you see as the main challenges for the year ahead?

There are three major items in the coming 12 months that are of great importance to our area: the Strathfield Town Centre Project, release of the Local Environment Plan (LEP) and getting Strathfield a fully functioning police station.

I’m also passionate about cycling, and plan to raise the idea of introducing bike lanes. I’m not proposing to close roads but for there to be markings to indicate possible bike routes in the area.

Bold new plan to curb crimewave

Strathfield Council will engage in using social media and community events to lower crime rates

A new plan involving as much as $250,000 worth of projects over four years to combat Strathfield’s street crime has gone on public exhibition.

Among the ideas are “crime watch walking groups”, which would see locals populate crime hot spots.

Another suggestion promotes the idea of residents holding community events, such as barbecues, in high-crime locations to deter street crime and promote a sense of community.

Strathfield cab rank assault leaves driver in hospital

Police establish a crime scene after a taxi driver sustained upper body injuries in a fight outside Strathfield Station

Police have charged a 53-year-old taxi driver from Greenacre over an fight with another taxi driver outside Strathfield Station.

The 37-year-old victim sustained neck and facial wounds in the attack which took place at around 6:30am on Monday morning.

Police are still unclear on what sparked the row and are continuing their investigations.

The Greenacre taxi driver was arrested at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he was being treated for minor injuries.

Premier Barry O'Farrell joins Strathfield MP Charles Casuscelli in opening the new Strathfield electorate office

MP Charles Casuscelli has officially opened his electorate office - and pledged the issues in the electorate would be his total focus for the next four years.

 

In a politically star studded event -  including Premier Barry O'Farrell, Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian and a number of local MPs including Victor Dominello - Casuscelli pleaded for common sense in dealing with the electorate's problems.

Shop keepers take on role of crimefighters

Self-defence classes will soon be offered to Strathfield business owners

Small business owners will be asked to step onto the frontline as part of a new $150,000 crime prevention strategy unveiled this week.

Under the new Federal Government-funded initiative, shopkeepers could receive training in martial arts so they can physically neutralise would-be thieves and assailants. Other proposals include a wide-ranging public education campaign but most of the money will be spent on new  CCTV cameras and better lighting in crime-prone areas such as the Strathfield Town Square.

Judge says come Monday, she will be looking for a job

Virginia Judge has not lost any of her feistiness even after conceeding defeat at Saturday's state election, which handed victory to Liberal Charles Casuscelli.

Judge lashed out at colleagues following the defeat - "people know who they are" - for the loss, saying they did not act ethicallty and responsibly.

Strathfield MP fights for more ticket windows

Member for Strathfield Virginia Judge announces more ticket windows open

Two additional ticketing windows have opened at Strathfield Station after Member for Strathfield, Virginia Judge announced the new windows will be in operation from today.

 

Strathfield Station has experienced an increase in ticket sales due to the increase in passengers using the station and Judge said there has been an increase in 18 per cent between 2000 and 2007 in passengers using the station.

“The public transport system has deteriorated a lot under the present Labor Government. The people in the Inner West and especially Strathfield have been the biggest losers of bad Labor policies. Labor blew $150 million on the failed Metro Project and another $150 million on duplication of the Iron Cove Bridge. None of this has produced any improvement whatsoever.

Performance in the Park

Talent quest and family fun day at Strathfield Park this weekend.

Pray for no rain this Sunday! Strathfield Council is hosting a talent quest and family fun day at Strathfield Park. The concert will act as a platform for young performers in the area to display their talents to the locals – from dancers to musicians, and actors.

Proud parents and friends can watch from a picnic rug while the little ones run around face-painted in the petting zoo or on the jumping castle.
